BOSS (Being Out Staying Safe) Training

BOSS is a fun series of workshops for LGBTQ youth and young adults (ages 13-24). In a small group of no more than 8 people, we talk about sex, learn about safer sex and what that means for LGBT young people. Each workshop is a chance to meet others, become an expert on STDs and HIV and learn/talk about all the juicy details of safer sex! ALSO, snacks will be provided at all sessions and if you complete ALL 6 sessions of the BOSS workshop you will receive a $50 stipend!!! Social Networks Peer Recruiter Training

Get trained as a peer recruiter and become part of our LGBT youth outreach team! Learn outreach skills and become an expert on HIV and STI prevention. Our outreach team is the heart of our program, helping to organize events, recruit new peers and spread the word on safer sex, HIV/STI education and prevention. All peer recruiters receive $50 for successfully completing the training as well as a small stipend for all outreaches. Job Readiness Workshop #1: RESUME WRITING
Monday, August 9th
5pm-7pm
This is the first of four job readiness workshops in the month of August. If you already have a resume that you want to improve or if you’re starting from scratch; if this is for a current job search, future job search, applying for an internship or applying for school, this is the workshop for YOU. Together we will discuss resume formats, content, and general dos and don’ts. You do not have to attend all four job readiness workshops to take part in this one. This workshop is open to all LGBTQ and straight ally youth ages 13-24.
Job Readiness Workshop #2: CREATING A COVER LETTER
Monday, August 16th
4pm-6pm
Once you have created a resume, the next step is to directly speak to the jobs you want to apply to. The cover letter allows you to show more detail around your strengths, your interest in a particular position and why you would be a perfect fit for a particular job. Bring cover letters you have written already, or start one from the beginning. You will also receive examples of cover letters and we will discuss best cover letter writing practices.
Job Readiness Workshop #3: INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES
Monday, August 23rd
4pm-6pm
Do you feel like you don’t know what to say or how to act when you get into an interview? Learn about different interview techniques to decrease nervousness, increase your ability to profile your strengths and talents and show that you are the person for the job! We will also be role playing different job interview situations.
Job Readiness Workshop #4: JOB SEARCHING

This is the last of our series of job readiness workshops in the month of August. Here, we will talk about different job searching tools that will help you find the job you want. We will explore job searching on the internet, in newspapers, in person and other resources available to aid you in the job searching process.

Creative Writing Group

Do you write poetry? Prose? Monologues? Short Stories? Ever wish you had an open and supportive forum to share your writing? Join us for a new creative writing group where LGBTQ youth can come and share their writing in a safe and supportive space. Each group there will be different themes and ideas to write about as well as time for free writing. All styles of writing are welcome! If you are new to writing you are welcome as well! This event is open to all LGBTQ and ally youth ages 13-24.

Digital Photography Workshop
Tuesday, August 31st
5:30pm-7:30pm
Explore the St. George area through the lens of photography. We will walk through the area together taking photographs of our personal points of interest. Then we will return to the Center and utilize the computer lab to view and discuss our photographs together. One camera will be available for participants to share, or feel free to bring your own digital camera (with connecting wire for the computer!). This event is open to all LGBTQ and ally youth ages 13-24

LGBTQ Youth Open Mic Night
Friday, August 20th
7pm-9pm
Come show off your talents and share your creativity! Sing, dance, play music, read your poems / short stories, and more (or even just come and be a supportive audience member!). If you have something to share, we want to hear/see it! We want to be heard/seen in a safe and comfortable environment, and this is that place! This event is open to all LGBTQ and straight ally youth ages 13-24.

ONGOING SERVICES for YOUTH
at THE CENTER
A variety of LGBT Center programs serve teens, ages 13 to 17 and young adults, ages 18 to 24. All services are free but participants must first register and be interviewed by the Youth Program Coordinator. Contact (718) 808- 1353 for more information.
The LGBT Youth Drop-in Space at the Center provides a supportive, safe and welcoming space where LGBT youth can meet, connect with others, participate in activities and events, hang out, talk, text, attend educational workshops, gain access to other agency services and programs, and most importantly, be themselves.
The LGBT Youth Drop-In Space is open Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM until 7:30 PM and Fridays from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
Safe Space and Legally Queer are supportive counseling groups where LGBT youth explore and address questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, coming out to family and friends, and other issues relevant to healthy development in a setting that is both welcoming and caring. Safe Space is an ongoing support group for LGBT teens ages 13 to 17. There are two groups each week. Legally Queer is an ongoing, weekly support group for young people ages 18 to 24.
